Zero Fare for Better Air

RTD Zero Fare Campaign cloud background

What is Zero Fare for Better Air?

Zero Fare for Better Air is a collaborative, statewide initiative designed to reduce ground-level ozone by increasing use of public transit. The effort is made possible by Colorado Senate Bill 22-180, the ozone season transit grant program in partnership with the Colorado Energy Office.

During the month of August, RTD will offer zero fares across their entire system as part of this initiative.

What is ground-level ozone?

  • Ground-level ozone forms when chemical reactions occur between nitrogen emitted from cars and other sources and volatile organic compounds in the presence of sunlight, making levels highest during the summer months.
  • Colorado’s ozone season runs from June 1 to August 31
  • Reducing ground traffic and encouraging the use of public transit can help lower ozone forming emissions and thereby reduce ground-level ozone during the ozone season
  • Approximately 84% of greenhouse gas emissions that come from transportation are due to daily commutes. By leaving the car at home, a person can save up to 20 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions every day.
