Historic District Status

General Overview

Historic districts are listed in the register following review and approval by the Lafayette Historic Preservation Board.The approved recommendation is forwarded to the Lafayette City Council, who may, by ordinance, designate the neighborhood as a historic district. Becoming part of a historic district does not:

  • Apply to building interiors
  • Obligate you to undertake rehabilitation or restoration
  • Require an owner to make any changes to the site
  • Restrict the uses normally allowed on the property

Benefits of Being a Historic District

  • Become eligible to apply for tax credits and/or Colorado State Historical Fund grant money
  • It protects the historic character of your property and your neighborhood
  • May realize an increase in the value of your home and neighborhood
  • Obtain official recognition that your building has special significance as part of an important neighborhood in Lafayette's history
