Contractor license information
All contractors doing construction work within the City limits and being compensated for that work must be licensed with the City. Licenses are good for one year from the day your license is issued.
The City is now requiring all contractors to apply online for a license and permit using MyGov portal. Access the portal by selecting one of the tabs that relate to your contractor license with the City.

Contractors with a current license
If you already have a MyGov account and have not upgraded to the new version, please follow these steps:
- Access the previous version at https://app.mygov.us/login
- Enter your username and password
- Follow the system prompts that will take you to the new version of MyGov
Contractors with a current City license who forgot your username or never accessed MyGov online, email us at buildingpermits@lafayetteco.gov.
I don't have a MyGov Account and need to renew my license
Contractors with a current City license who never created a MyGov account or forgot your username (which is the email you used to create your account), email us at buildingpermits@lafayetteco.gov.
I have a MyGov account and need to renew my license
If you already have a MyGov account and have not upgraded to the new version, please follow these steps:
- Access the previous version using https://app.mygov.us/login
- Enter the email you used as your username and your password
- If you forgot your password, select "Forgot Password" in MyGov
- Follow the system prompts that will take you to the new version of MyGov
Access MyGov for your renewal
After completing the steps above, you will now have access to the upgraded version of MyGov that the City is using. Continue your renewal process by completing these steps:
- Sign in to your MyGov account at web.mygov.us/login/ and select "Collaborator Login"
- Select the "City of Lafayette" and it will bring up your dashboard
- Select the appropriate line item for your license under the Credentials section from the left-hand side menu options. You will see your license(s)
- Select on the ID number to bring up the license with a tab for renew
- Select renew to upload your insurance, state cards, etc., and fill in the dates
- Scroll to the bottom and select on +Request Renewal Credential to complete the renewal
Contractors applying for a new license
Contractors who are new to conducting business with the City and need to apply for a new license, create an account through the MyGov portal and select the Applicant Registration button.
Complete the MyGov registration process and follow these steps:
- Select the Get Started for the City of Lafayette
- Select the Make a New Request button in the upper left-hand side of the screen
- Select Contractor Licensing, then the correct license type
- Follow the prompts and upload the requested information
- Contractors: upload a PDF of the required General Liability Insurance Certificate
- Contractors with employees: upload a PDF of the Workman’s Compensation Insurance Certificate
- Electrical and plumbing contractors: upload a PDF of your required State and Master License
- Email of an invoice will be sent, once your application has been approved
- Payment is required after you receive your invoice by either:
- Paying online with your MyGov account
- Dropping your check in the City's water utility bill dropbox
- Mailing your check to the City of Lafayette, Building Division, 1290 S. Public Road, Lafayette, CO 80026.
Types of licenses and fees
- Electrical Contractor License- A copy of your State Master License is required.
- No fee
- General Class A - Required for all commercial work over 2,000 square feet in size.
- $175 fee
- General Class B- Required for commercial work up to 2,000 square feet in size and any size of residential construction.
- $125 fee
- General Class C - Allows residential construction / remodeling up to 3,500 square feet in size.
- $100 fee
- Mechanical License - For commercial and residential HVAC.
- $125 fee
- Plumbing License - Copy of master plumbing license is required.
- $150 fee
- Special Contractor License - Covers roofing, excavating, sign installer, mobile home installer, concrete and form, housing and building movers, gas fitter, landscaping, fire systems, and siding.
