Each year, the City completes a Sidewalk Improvement Program and initiates a contract
for services to replace sidewalk in areas where repairs are needed most. Because it is
most cost effective, repairs are done by neighborhood. The neighborhoods with the
worst sidewalk are repaired first.
Sidewalk is replaced according to set criteria. Reasons for replacement include:
- Tripping danger
- Structural instability
- Interference with proper stormwater flow
Repairs will not be completed for minor damage or aesthetics such as small cracks or
marks.
The City keeps a database that includes each address or street with repairs that have
been requested by residents and repairs that are identified as part of the annual
sidewalk assessment. Requested repairs remain in the database until their
neighborhoods are scheduled for repair.
We understand that many areas of sidewalk in Lafayette need attention. The City will
use the available funding as efficiently as possible to improve these areas as quickly as
possible.
New Sidewalks
The City does not install new sidewalks. If there is no sidewalk, it is the responsibility of
the property owner to install sidewalk in areas adjacent to public rights-of-way.
