Minimum qualifications and special requirements
- Must be at least 21 years of age
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Must possess or be able to obtain a valid Class "R" Colorado driver's license and have a good driving record
- Must be Colorado POST certified or have the ability to be POST certified
- Must pass a thorough background investigation to include polygraph, psychological, and physical evaluations
2023 Police Officer pay rates and benefits
- Patrol Officer Step 1: $67,475.20
- Patrol Officer Step 2: $75,899.20
- Patrol Officer Step 3: $85,404.80
- Patrol Officer Step 4: $96,075.20
- Full benefits for officers and their immediate family, worth up to approximately $26,000 annually
- Uniforms and equipment are fully paid for, with the exception of a service firearm
- Spanish-speaking bilingual candidates who pass a bilingual test earn $0.50 more per hour
- Statewide Defined Benefits Retirement Plan through the Fire & Police Pension Association of Colorado (FPPA)
Available hiring incentives
- $10,000 lateral hiring bonus with two or more years of civilian police patrol experience; detentions experience does not qualify
- Police academy tuition reimbursement if hired within six months of completion of a Colorado POST-approved police academy
- Contract buy-outs if under an employment contract with another police agency
- Academy sponsorship by the Lafayette Police Department when hiring recruit positions

- Full day of in-service training scheduled for nine months annually
